![]() The start of winter in Melbourne. The mercury failed to reach a top of 12 degrees celcius today. The top temperature was only 11.6 with a low temperature of 5.9. Many flights were delayed or cancelled. Traffic condition was chaotic. The picture shows Melbourne Cricket Ground which hosted the 1956 Olympic games and 2006 Commonwealth games. The picture was taken from Eureka Tower. The Bureau of Meteorology predicted that Melbourne was heading towards its coldest winter in 10 years. Let's welcome it :D . 10.6.2008 (9.15 a.m. - Old Arts Hall) - Fermentation Process Engineering 12.6.2008 (9.15 a.m. - Wilson Hall) - Reactor Engineering 16.6.2008 (9.15 a.m. - Exhibition Building) - Heat and Mass Transport Processes 20.6.2008 (9.15 a.m. - Exhibition Building) - Chemical Engineering Management . A diet high in tryptophan — an amino acid converted by the body into the feel-good chemical serotonin — can improve mood and wellbeing, a pediatrician and natural health expert, Caroline Longmore, said. The body cannot produce tryptophan so unless we get enough through diet, we may suffer a deficiency, leading to low serotonin levels, which is associated with mood disorders, anxiety, cravings and irritable bowel syndrome. "Following a diet which contains foods rich in naturally occurring serotonin will improve your mood, leaving you energised and in a state of harmony and wellbeing," Dr Longmore said. Mental health experts say that while the theory behind tryptophans for improving mood is solid, their use by depressed patients has a chequered history in Australia. Gordon Parker, from the Black Dog Institute, said tryptophan supplements were widely used before the 1990s but after several patients suffered serious side effects from a contaminated batch they were temporarily taken off the market. In her e-book, The Serotonin Secret, Dr Longmore claims the best way to get optimum tryptophan levels is through a carefully devised eating plan. She rates dozens of foods for their levels of tryptophan. Written with an Australian-trained medical scientist and naturopath, Katrin Hempel, the book has 50 recipes designed to solve serotonin imbalance without drugs. The concept works on the same principle as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, such as the popular antidepressant Prozac. Britain's Food and Mood Project recommends eating chicken, sardines, turkey, salmon, fresh tuna, nuts and seeds to boost serotonin levels. But Associate Professor Michael Baigent, clinical adviser to the BeyondBlue anti-depression organisation, said there was only low-level evidence to suggest tryptophans had a medical effect. Statistics show that in any 12 months, almost 17% of adult Australians have a mental disorder, with anxiety, depression and bipolar the most common. In February, a major international review of clinical trials of new generation drugs, including Prozac and Aropax, found they were no more effective than a placebo, or sugar tablet, for most people with depression. WASHINGTON : A daily snack of quality dark chocolate is healthy for pregnant women and protects them from possible high blood pressure problems, a medical study said Monday. By biting into rich, dark chocolate, there is a 69 percent less chance of contracting preeclampsia, a major pregnancy complication with cardiovascular manifestations such as hypertension that affects up to eight percent of pregnancies, said Dr Elizabeth Triche. The associate director at the Yale Center for Perinatal, Pediatric & Environmental Epidemiology, at Yale University, co-authored the 1996-2000 study of 2,291 women published in the May issue of Epidemiology. The study method measured the density of theobromine a chemical in chocolate in the arterial cord blood extracted from the umbilical cord at delivery. The primary effects of theobromine include diuresis, myocardial stimulation and vasodilatation. Other chemicals in chocolate include magnesium, which lowers hypertension, and flavanoids, which are potent antioxidants, the study said. "Quantifying self-reported chocolate and cocoa consumption is extremely difficult due to considerable variation in the cocoa content of chocolate products," Triche said. "The darker (the chocolate) is, the better it is. The more highly processed, the more fat and sweet it is, the less it contains theobromine," she said, adding that theobromine concentrations in chocolate vary from 0.15 percent to 0.46 percent. "In this prospective cohort of pregnant women, we observed that chocolate consumption, as measured by cord serum levels of the biomarker theobromine, was associated with lower risk of preeclampsia," the study concluded. "It's like eating a good quality chocolate bar every day," said Triche. - AFP/ar From www.channelnewsasia.com . New feature has been added :D . I just felt like dying. I seriously am. For the next two to three weeks, I will be busy. Next week, I will be having Reactor Engineering Mid-Semester test and it's not easy at all. I just had Heat and Mass Mid-Semester Test on tuesday. I have to start writing laboratory report. Before I can do that, I need to manipulate the data first because our results were so horrible. Well, it's just another bad practical. Most importantly, I have received one MAJOR assignment. The word major is so appropriate. It's just.... madness. Before the end of the instruction, the lecturer says that... "And remember, successful people find the way. You have earned the right to enter the University of Melbourne, so you have the potential to be successful. I am confident you can find the way." Oh hell yeah, we are not Harvard undergraduate. Thanks! . Andri, When I think of you, it makes me wantto kick you for a while (because i keep disturbing her) But you still make me smile :) Through CPA, we became friends and now I am stuck with you God, help me make it through! :P If it's not food, girls is what you always think of, When will you settle for good?? Apple, Tiffeny, felicia, tracy Take your pick but anyway, you'll get a kick :P Always I may complain But my goals you help me attain :) My gossip partner and study-buddy You're who I'll call to bury a body If I kill somebody (if it's not you :P) Krista wrote for my birthday message :D . Thomas Beatie is married to Nancy. They live in a quiet Oregon neighbourhood, and are looking forward to the birth of their first baby in June. And, oh yeah, it's Thomas who's carrying their offspring. Born a female, Thomas has undergone a chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy, but had no change to his reproductive organs. Thomas is seen as a man in his community, and he and Nancy see themselves as any other male/female couple. After Nancy had a hysterectomy 20 years ago, it was left to Thomas to carry their much-wanted baby. So he stopped taking his bi-monthly testosterone injections and let his menstrual cycle restart after an eight-year hiatus. After one year, and having seen – and been rejected by – several doctors, Nancy and Thomas got access to a cryogenic sperm bank and purchased anonymous donor vials for a home insemination. After an ectopic pregnancy, in which the couple lost triplet fetuses and one of Thomas' Fallopian tubes, he fell pregnant again. He says his identity as a man remains "constant" in spite of his pregnancy. "… I am so lucky to have a such a loving, supportive wife. I will be my daughters father, and Nancy will be her mother," he wrote in an article for US publication The Advocate. "We will be a family." What do you think? . You're a falling star You're the getaway car You're the line in the sand When I go to far You're the swimming pool On an august day And you're the perfect thing to say And you play it coy but it's kinda cute Oh when you smile at me you know exactly what you do Baby don't pretend that you don't know it's true Cause you can see it when I look at you And in this crazy life And through these crazy times It's you It's you You make me sing You're every line You're every word You're everything Michael Buble - Everything *Dedicated especially for you* . |
